House passes ban of child gender modification
May 12, 2023 | Austin, TX
It’s been a long, hard road, but at last we have a win in the fight to stop the chemical and surgical gender modification of children in Texas. SB 14 by Senator Donna Campbell of District 14 and its identical companion bill in the House, HB 1686 by Representative Tom Oliverson of District 130, came to the floor for the third time around mid-afternoon today.
Representative Oliverson stood on the floor and faced a series of 19 attempts to amend and water down the legislation. Oliverson discussed each proposed amendment and answered questions regarding each before the House voted them down, one by one.
The vote was held at approximately 8 pm this evening and was 92-48.
This issue is a Republican Party of Texas priority for the 88th Legislative Session. “Ban Gender Modification of Children” was chosen by more than 5,000 voting delegates at the state convention, June 13-18, 2022, in Houston. Delegates were presented with a list of 15 topics selected by the Legislative Priorities Committee after a comprehensive review of resolutions passed at the precinct and senate district levels of the convention process. Delegates were allowed to vote on eight topics, which became the official Legislative Priorities of the Republican Party of Texas.
This is a great victory for Republicans and all who care about the well-being of children. The next stop for this bill is Governor Greg Abbott’s desk.
